The beautiful seaside town of Pattaya is situated just 150 kilometres to the east of Bangkok and is one of the most popular places to visit in Thailand. Beach Life
Chilling out on the beach is a popular activity among visitors to Pattaya. The long stretch of golden sand is fairly clean and is lapped by cool, clear waters. In addition to swimming, visitors can take part in a wide range of water sports including jet skiing, parasailing, wakeboarding and windsurfing. A number of local companies offer scuba diving and snorkelling trips, while people who like casting their lines into the ocean can embark on a special night fishing trip.

Shopping
Shopping is another popular pastime in Pattaya and there are numerous shops and stalls to be found here. Thepprasit Market can be found on Thepprasit Road on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings and is a great place to browse for bargains, while Tuk.com on South Road is a specialises in cheap electrical goods. The Made In Thailand Night Plazar can be found on Second Road and is open daily from 08:00 to 23:00, while Market Pattaya is also situated on Second Road and in addition to a large number of market stalls also features a small stage for evening music and dance performances.

Major Attractions

Sanctuary of Truth – The sanctuary of truth is best described as a visionary environment: part art installation, religious shrine and cultural monument. Constructed in four wings dedicated to Thai, Khmer, Chinese and Indian religious iconography, the architecture and setting is impressive. The ornate temple-like complex was conceived by Lek Viriyaphant. Lek Viriyaphant was a Thai millionaire who spent his fortune on this and other heritage projects (such as ancient city near Bangkok) that revived and preserved ancient building techniques and architecture in danger of extinction.

Anew Kusala Sala – Anew Kusala Sala is a popular stop for tour groups. This museum contains more than 300 very impressive pieces of chinese artwork, mainly bronze and brass statues depicting historical figures as well as Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist deities. It was found by Sa-nga Kulkobkiat, a Thai national who grew up in China, the museum was intended as a friendship-building project between the two countries. The first floor is a crowded pavilion of Chinese immortals, from Pangu, the cosmic giant, to Guan Yin, the goddess of mercy. The 2nd floor terrace is the museum’s most dramatic, with larger-than- life-sized statues of Shaolin monks depicting different martial arts poses. There is also a touching collection of daily life statues that visitors place 1 baht coins on. The museum is 16 kilometers south of central Pattaya.

Khao Phra Tamnak – A giant golden Buddha sits atop this forested hill between Jomtien and South Pattaya, proof perhaps that religion has not deserted this modern-day Gomorrah. The serene Buddha figure of Wat Phra Yai dates back to when Pattaya was a small fishing village. You can walk here from the southern end of Walking Street. This small hill is also known as Khao Phra Bat, its top reached by an asphalt road, provides panoramic views of Pattaya City and Pattaya Bay. The place is situated a monument of Kromluang Champion, known as the Father of the Royal Thai Navy. Buddha image is enshrined on the hilltop.

Activities

Elephant Ride and Jungle Trek Half-Day Tour – This activity is fun and adventurous. You get an animal ride and so do you get a tour. Pattaya Orphanage – Pattaya Orphanage was founded in the 1970s when Father Ray was given a baby by a parishioner who could not care for the child. This first child led to many more as word spread that the priest could care for the unintended consequences of the US military presence in the area during the Vietnam War. Today the orphanage cares for children orphaned by modern problems for example poverty, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS and helps find adoptive parents. Those interested in helping the orphanage can sponsor a meal, donate items, and volunteer for an extended period of time.

Fairtex Sports Club – Burned-out professionals, martial art fans and adventorous athletes flock to this resort-style camp for Muay Thai (Thai boxing) training and a sweat-inducing vacation. Accommodation packages are available and use of the club’s pool and other sports facilities are included too. Fairfax has been training Muay Thay fighters for 40 years. The company opened this sports club in 2005, to provide western-style comfort for international visitors interested in fighting and fitness courses. Daily sessions include pad work, sparring and clinching, exercise drills and body sculpting work.

Other Attractions
There are a large number of attractions for visitors who are on holiday in Thailand to enjoy in Pattaya. People who don’t have the time to visit the whole of Thailand can get an overview of the country’s main attractions at Mini Siam and Mini Europe. Pattaya is a real paradise for food lovers and just about every type of cuisine can be found here, from cheap and tasty Thai dishes sold by street vendors to Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Italian, French, German, Indian and Scandinavian dishes. Most of the area’s leading hotels come complete with excellent restaurants where visitors can dine in style, while the sois that line the ocean feature reasonably priced dining options. People who are looking for budget dining options should also check out the food courts that can be found in local shopping malls.

Nightlife
The largest selection of nightlife venues can be found along the sois that run off the road that runs alongside the beach road. Many of the largest restaurants and bars host live entertainment in the evenings, which ranges from Thai boxing and traditional Thai dance performances to live jazz, blues and rock. People who love to watch televised sports will also be able to unwind in one of Pattaya’s sports bars while watching the action unfold on screen.

Walking Street
Most of the main action takes place here and the vibrant atmosphere of Walking Street has turned this long, neon lit lane into an attraction by itself. Walking Street runs from Soi 13 to Soi 16 in South Pattaya and features a wide range of different types of evening entertainment including special go-go shows, Western-style pubs that offer pub games like pool and darts, karaoke bars, massage parlours and of course plenty of lovely ladies to feast your eyes on. This area is closed to traffic in the evening, which means that visitors will be able to wander along the street at their leisure while soaking up the atmosphere.
