Bangkok is the city that never sleeps and its many pleasures can be enjoyed at nearly any time of the day or night. Night markets (talat yen in Thai) can be found in most areas of the city and are open from around 17:00 or 18:00 until midnight. In addition to selling a wide range of items, these night markets provide cheap meals and snacks, street side bars and a range of other entertainment options. Here is a rundown of some of Bangkok’s best night markets that are just waiting to be discovered by people who are looking for things to do in Thailand.
This colourful night market is situated next to On Nut BTS station, opposite Tesco Lotus. The outer edge of the night market features stalls that sell various Thai meals and snacks. Venture further into the market and you will find stalls that sell everything from cloths to DVDs and cosmetics, while a couple of bars in the centre sell beers from around the world and are surrounded by food stalls that sell German, Italian and Japanese dishes.
This impressive riverside pleasure zone offers a whole host of entertainment options, including a large number of market stalls. Asiatique has a more upmarket atmosphere than many of its competitors and is a good place to purchase designer clothes at bargain rates, antiques and handicrafts.
Spending time in Khaosan Road is top on the itinerary of most Bangkok day tours. The stalls line both sides of this vibrant street and sell everything from souvenir t-shirts and souvenirs to travel essentials such as padlocks, backpacks and key chains. Prices tend to be slightly higher here, but most of the traders will discount items, especially if you can speak a few words of Thai and barter in a friendly manner.
This large night market can be found close to Khaosan Road near the Rattanakosin Hotel. The atmosphere here is much more traditional Thai, with prices to match. Klong Lod is a great place to pick up second hand items such as shoes and clothes, while the market also features a large food section where dishes such as pad Thai and grilled chicken with rice can be bought for just a few Baht.
This bustling night market sets up on Saturday and Sunday nights around Suar Pa, Luang, Worachak and Charoenkrung roads. Everything from DVDs to spare car parts and electronics can be found here and this is a great place to indulge in a spot of people watching in between browsing for bargains.
Patpong Night Market
If you are looking for passable copies of designer goods such as bags, watches and wallets, this market is a great place to browse for bargains and is very popular among people who are on holiday in Thailand. However, some copies are better than others, so it is best to inspect them closely before buying. Competition is high at this market with prices to match, so make sure you exercise your bartering skills and shop around.
This enormous night market is open every day except Wednesdays and sets up around the Memorial Bridge. Just about anything you could possibly desire can be found at Saphan Phut and the atmosphere is light and friendly, which makes this a great place to shop. A number of riverside bars can also be found on the edge of the market, which are great places to unwind for a while after a major shopping trip.
