The mighty Chao Phraya River runs through the heart of Bangkok and is a great place to hangout both in the daytime and at night. Whether you want to explore the area’s world famous attractions, enjoy a drink while watching the sunset or enjoy a romantic meal with someone special, this is a great place to hang out.
The river is lined with a large number of famous temples and prominent Thailand tourist attractions such as Wat Arun and Wat Po. The Grand Palace is situated close to Wat Po and can be reached by river ferry, while Wat Arun is situated on the other side of the river. Other attractions that line the river include the gateway to the vibrant Chinatown district, Assumption Cathedral, the gruesome Bangkok Forensic Museum, King Rama I and the Royal Barges Museum. Many of these attractions can be admired in comfort and style while taking a leisurely ferry ride along the river. Special tourist boats run from Saphan Taksin pier and head north all the way to Phra Arthit pier close to Khaosan Road. The trip often comes with a live commentary, which gives visitors an insight into the history of some of these attractions as the boat sails slowly past.
Dining by the river is a great way to unwind after a busy day of exploring the city and one of the best things to do in Thailand. Riverside restaurants come in all shapes and sizes, from basic Thai restaurants to luxurious establishments located in some of the city’s top hotels. All of these restaurants offer stunning river views and top options include Angelini Italian restaurant at the Shangri-La Hotel, Arun Residence on Soi Pratoo Nok Yoong opposite Wat Arun, Be My Guest next to the Millennium Hilton and Benihana Japanese Restaurant at the Anantara Riverside Resort. Enjoying a leisurely breakfast at the Mandarin Oriental is also a decadent experience that should not be missed.
Take in stunning river views while sipping cool cocktails at some of Bangkok’s enchanting riverside bars. Sunning elevated views are offered from Sky Bar and Balco Bar and Three Sixty at Millennium Hilton, and these are great places to take a date when you really want to impress. There are also plenty of more modest riverside bars to choose from in areas such as Phra Artit and Thewet.
Asiatique The Riverfront is a vibrant entertainment zone that can be found on the opposite side of the river to the Saphan Taxsi pier. Visitors can take a free boat from this pier to enjoy everything from shopping to riverside dining, drinking and vibrant stage shows. The Patravadi Theatre can also be found on the far bank of the Chao Phraya River close to Siriraj Hospital and offers riverside dining and theatrical performances.
Public ferries run along the Chao Phraya River and stop at most of the major attractions including Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. These ferries connect with the BTS at Saphan Taksin, making it possible to reach the river for just a few Baht. Saphan Taksin station also connects with the BTS line, which means that the river can be reached quickly and conveniently from most sections of the city. You can also arrange special Bangkok day tours along the river with a Thailand travel agent.
